We are in Arcata, CA for a week on our way to the Oregon coast…let the explorations begin! Topping the list was a hike/auto tour through the Avenue of the Giants to see the mighty redwoods. On the way out, we stopped at the RV Park office to inquire if there was a local gym that we could use during our stay. The nice lady behind the counter cheerfully advised that there is a Senior Center nearby (Really, it’s true! …I wouldn’t make that up!)
We could hardly wait to get our boots on the ground as we wound through the towering forest in our Toad. Our hurry was hushed instantly when we stepped onto the path.
Looking up at the rutted, mammoth trunks stretching skyward and realizing that these sentinels were hundreds and even thousands of years old was overwhelming. And then we heard it…. a long, slow, creaking sound.
It was as if one of these ancient giants breathed a tired sigh. Or was it a greeting? We waited, searching the green canopy above. Which one? There it was again. Had we been chattering along the way, we may never have heard it.
We completed the 31 mile scenic tour, stopping at the points of interest and learning some history about the area.
Our explorations then took us to the Victorian town of Ferndale, CA. Besides enjoying the quaint Victorian architecture, we stumbled upon a cemetery that we just had to walk through. Yes, you heard that right!
Rambling up a very steep hill on a residential street and in full bloom, it was somehow inviting.
To finish the day, we stopped at the Loleta Cheese Factory (yep..in Loleta, CA) and sampled a variety of cheeses produced right there on-site. Believe it or not, they had about 20+ varieties to sample. With cheese in-hand we called it a day!
Your trip brings back memories from when we drove your same root up to Canada, when James was only 18 months old. We were heading up to see the World Fair. Enjoy your trip, we loved every bit of it when we drove it 27 yrs ago.

“with cheese in-hand” I hope there was a bottle of wine nearby or even better a winery!

Beautiful Pictures. And Yes we also hiked into the cemetery in Ferndale and we have to come clean “we have ventured into several cemeteries during our travels. Oh and the giants do speak to you. Even though we have been there many times it is so much fun to experience it through you eyes and words. By the way Roseanne you should be a writer. See you in a couple of months.
